State Visit of His Highness the Amir of Qatar to India – A Report

At the
invitation of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Amir of the State of
Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani is visiting India (17-18
February 2025). He is accompanied by a high-level delegation, including
Ministers, senior officials and a business delegation.
On his
arrival, the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, in a rare diplomatic gesture,
extended a warm welcome to the Amir of Qatar. Breaking the formal diplomatic
protocol, PM Modi went to the airport to receive his ‘brother’, Amir of Qatar, H.H.
Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, upon his arrival in India. This would be the
second visit of His Highness the Amir of Qatar to India. His Highness earlier
visited India on a State Visit in March 2015.
His
Highness the Amir of the State of Qatar had been accorded a ceremonial welcome
at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhawan. HH the Amir held discussions with
Hon’ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu.
Later, PM
Modi and HH Sheikh AL- Thani held meeting and elevated India Qatar bilateral
relations to Strategic Partnership. They mainly focused on strengthening trade,
energy and investment ties.
Besides Agreement
on Establishment of Bilateral Strategic Partnership, both the countries agreed
and signed a number of documents, for example, Revised Agreement for Avoidance of Double Taxation
and Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income, MoU on
Financial and Economic Cooperation between Ministry of Finance, Government of
India and Ministry of Finance, Government of the State of Qatar, MoU for
Cooperation between Invest India and Invest Qatar etc.
Other main
outcomes of the meeting are, both the countries set the target to double
bilateral trade b 2030. Qatar announced a commitment to invest USD 10 billion
in India. they are interested in different areas, like, infrastructure,
technology, food security etc. Qatar investment authority (QIA) also decides to
open an office in India. Both the countries also agreed to explore an
India-Qatar Free Trade Agreement.
India and
Qatar have deep-rooted historical ties of friendship, trust and mutual respect.
In recent years, the ties between the two countries including in the areas of
trade, investment, energy, technology, culture and people-to-people ties have
continued to strengthen.
Qatar is
the largest supplies of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) to India. India imports
around 70%of its needs for natural gas from Qatar.
Besides
that, around 700 million Indian residing in Qatar forms the largest expatriate
community of Qatar, and is appreciated for its positive contribution in the
progress and development of Qatar.
