A Brief Report on President of Singapore State visit to India, 14-18 January, 2025

President of the Republic of
Singapore, Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, was on a State Visit to India from 14-18
January 2025. President Tharman was accompanied by his spouse, Mrs. Jane Ittogi
Shanmugaratnam and a high-level delegation including Minister for Transport and
Second Minister for Finance Mr. Chee Hong Tat, Senior Minister of State,
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of National Development Ms. Sim Ann,
Members of Parliament of Singapore and officials.
India - Singapore
cooperation has deepened and diversified over the years. The bilateral ties are
characterized by strengthening political, defence, economic, cultural,
educational and people-to-people contacts. Both the countries share warm and
friendly relations, which have provided a firm basis to expanding
cooperation in the fields of advanced manufacturing, connectivity, digitalization,
healthcare & medicine, sustainability, and education & skills
development. Singapore
is a key pillar of India’s ‘Act East’ Policy and India’s vision of the
Indo-Pacific.
The visit followed an eventful
year in India-Singapore bilateral relations, the hallmark of which was Prime
Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s visit to Singapore in September 2024, which also
witnessed elevation of India-Singapore ties to a Comprehensive Strategic
Partnership. The State Visit of President Tharman marked the commencement of
the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic
relations between India and Singapore, which, with time, have evolved into a
robust and multi-faceted partnership.
President Tharman was welcomed by
Hon'ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at
Rashtrapati Bhavan and was accorded a Ceremonial Guard of Honour. President
Tharman paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat.
President Tharman held discussions with President
Smt. Droupadi Murmu, who also hosted a banquet in his honour. The Presidents
also welcomed cooperation in forward-looking areas including semiconductors,
industrial park development, as well as the green and digital economies. Both
Presidents unveiled a joint logo commemorating 60th anniversary of
establishment of India-Singapore bilateral ties.
The joint logo
incorporates, colours from the Indian and Singaporean National flags, the Lotus
(National flower of India) & Orchid (National flower of Singapore), and the
number 60 highlighting the significant milestone of the 60th anniversary.
Overall, the logo reads "India Singapore 60 years of diplomatic
relations”. The placement of these elements symbolises the enduring friendship,
mutual trust and shared values between the two countries.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi
met the President of Singapore. During this meeting the two leaders extensively
reviewed the bilateral relationship and discussed ways to strengthen the
India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. They also exchanged views
on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar called on
President Tharman. In addition, Minister of Road Transport and Highways Shri
Nitin Gadkari; Minister of Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals &
Fertilizers Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda; Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs
Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman; Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal;
Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics &
Information Technology Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw; and MoS(IC) for Skill Development
and Entrepreneurship, and MoS for Education Shri Jayant Chaudhary called on
President Tharman. They discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation
including in the key India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable ISMR pillars, such
as connectivity, health, skills development, industrial park, digitalisation,
and advanced manufacturing.
The President of Singapore also visited
Odisha during 17-18 January 2025.
