India’s Position on Uninterrupted Flow of Shipment through the Strait of Hormuz

On 2nd April, 2026, Foreign Secretary
participated in a meeting hosted by UK on the situation in West Asia. More than
sixty countries participated in the meeting.
In his speech,
Foreign Secretary emphasized the importance of maintaining the principles of
freedom of navigation and unimpeded transit through international waterways.
Noting the impact of West Asia crisis on India’s energy security, Indian
Foreign Secretary stated that India is the only country, which have lost
mariners in attacks on merchant shipping in the Gulf.
Foreign Secretary
represented India at a meeting convened by the UK Foreign Secretary on the
situation in West Asia, where more than 60 countries participated. In his
speech, Mr. Foreign Secretary of India noted the importance of the principles
of freedom of navigation and unimpeded transit through international waterways.
He noted the impact of the West Asia crisis on India’s energy security.
Moreover, he also emphasized the fact that India is the only country to have
lost mariners in attacks on merchant shipping in the Gulf. He presented de-escalation
and a return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue among all concerned parties as
a viable solution of the crisis.
On the same day, responding
to media, MEA spokesperson stated that India is well aware of the resolution
proposed by Bahrain, which call for multinational naval partnership to secure
unimpeded transit through the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that India stands for
free and open commercial shipping and maritime security, on per with international
law.
He also confirmed
that ensuring safe and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is India’s biggest priority. For
that, India is in touch with Iran and other countries for safe transit of
Indian ships carrying LPG, LNG etc. He also mentioned that under Operation
Sankalp, India Navy is serving in the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden to
secure the area for maritime commerce.
According to MEA,
(till 2nd April, 2026) six Indian ships which have been able to
safely cross Hormuz. Besides the Strait, India is also monitoring all the
developments related to the Gulf and the ongoing conflict.
He also clearly
stated that no discussion held between India and Iran on toll payment to
release ships.
