Today, in the early morning, Ministry of External Affairs reported an incident of firing by the Sri Lankan Navy during the apprehension of Thirteen Indian fishermen in the proximity of Delft Island. Out of the 13 fishermen, who were on board the fishing vessel, two have received serious injuries and are currently getting treatment at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. Three other fishermen received minor injuries and have been treated for the same.

Ministry of External Affairs immediately called the Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi and lodged a strong protest over the incident. Indian High Commission in Colombo has also raised the matter with Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sri Lanka. Indian Consulate Officials in Jaffna have visited the injured fishermen at the hospital to seek their welfare and are extending all possible assistance to the fishermen and their families.

Keeping in mind the livelihood concern of fishermen from both sides, India has always emphasized the need to treat issues pertaining to fishermen in a humane and humanitarian manner. India strongly objected against the use of force under any circumstances whatsoever.

Last month, in December 2024, newly elected President of Sri Lanka Anura Kumara Dissanayaka was in India in a three days State Visit. During the visit, President Dissanayaka repeatedly acknowledged India’s unparallel, multi-pronged support for the people of Sri Lanka at the time of 2022 Sri Lanka economic crisis. During the visit, leaders of both the countries had an extensive discussion on fishermen issues. Both the leaders agreed that issues related to fishermen are related with livelihood issues and therefore, must be dealt with humane and humanitarian perspective. Today, India demanded strict observation of the existing understanding between the two governments regarding fishermen issue.
