First India-Arab Universities’ Presidents’ Conference (February 5-6, 2025)

Accelerating the relationship with Arab world, India organized the First India-Arab Universities’ Presidents’ Conference from at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi. The two days conference was organized by Ministry of External Affairs in association with University Grants Commission (UGC) as the knowledge partner, and the League of Arab States (LAS) as the co-organizer. The conference was organized under the education vertical of the Executive Program for implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation between India and League of Arab States.

The Indo-Arab Conference mainly aimed at harnessing the potential of higher education in ways that transcend the national borders and to lay the groundwork for future collaboration in the field of Higher education between India and the Arab world.

Prime focus of the conference was on Higher Education and Skill Development Cooperation between India and LAS. The conference touched issues like Development and Prosperity; Innovative and New Areas of Academic Cooperation: Sharing Experiences on New Approaches in the Field of Education including Usage of Digital Platforms; Academic Cooperation: Current Status and Challenges of Mutual Recognition of Degrees; Promoting Joint scientific and technological research and innovation including AI, Quantum Computing, Biotechnology; Framework for Promoting Faculty and Student Exchange, and Cooperation in Curriculum Development etc.

The conference was inaugurated by Shri. Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs. From the Arab side, the Conference was led by Minister of Education from the State of Libya Mr. Imran Muhamed Al-Qeeb. The other dignitaries who were present, Prof. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, Chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC), Secretary General of Association of Arab Universities, Dr. Amr Ezzat Salama and Director of Education and Scientific Research of LAS, Mr. Farraj Aljmi.

The Conference served as an important platform for Universities from India and the Arab World to engage with one another in meaningful ways. It also brought together the collective vision of academicians for the future of higher education.

Parliament discussion on Status of investigation on the 1985 Kanishka Bombing

Chakraborty On 6 th February, 2025, Shri Kartikeya Sharma, member of Rajya Sabha, expressed his concern regarding the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the 1985 Kanishka bombing. The attack claimed 329 lives, among them majority were India-origin, and 24 Indian nationals. He asked the current status of India's engagement with the Canadian Government and other partners, regarding the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the Kanishka bombing and the details thereof; he also asked the details of the steps being taken by the Ministry to ensure that all perpetrators of the bombing are extradited to India; and whether there is any mechanism in place to ensure that the Canadian Government is held accountable for any perceived lapses in their investigation or prosecution of the perpetrators, if so, the details thereof? China Approved Plans to Construct Dam on Transboundary River Brahmaputra

  On December 25, 2024 China approved construction of world’s largest dam on a transboundary river Yarlung-Tsangpo in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, called Brahmaputra river in India.  Yarlung-Tsangpo is the longest river of Tibet. The approved dam will be three times larger than the Three Gorges dam. China claimed that the project has gone through rigorous scientific verification and will not have any negative impact on downstream countries like, India and Bangladesh. India already reacted by saying that it will protect its own interest.
