Trump Administration’s hypocrisy about Ukraine War

Yesterday, US
President Trump delivered a speech at the United Nations General Assembly
(UNGA). In his speech, again, he blamed India for funding Ukraine War. In the
last one month, President Trump and several of his official’s repeatedly
accused India for funding Russia to continue war against Ukraine. How? India is
one of the largest buyers of Russian oil, though the import comprised only 35%
of India’s total import of oil. At the same time, because of its giant
refineries, India emerged as one of the prominent exporters in the world oil
export map.
Since the beginning
of the Ukraine war, US and the EU imposed a number of sanctions on Russia. To avoid
sanctions and to attract buyers, Russia has begun to sell its oil in cheap price.
India, a developing economy with large number of consumers, find buying cheap
Russian oil affordable and important for its economic security.
The Ukraine War, Russian Oil and Western Hypocrisy
Beside India, a
number of other countries also increased buying Russian oil to protect their
respective interests. Turkey is one of the most important among them. In the
last three years, Turkey’s import of Russian oil increased immensely. On the
basis of its oil import, Turkey jumped from 14th to 3rd
largest trade partner of Russia.
As countries like,
India, China, Turkey, never imposed any sanctions on Russia, they can buy,
refine, consume or sell Russian oil. But what about buyers? Those, who imposed
sanctions on Russia, of course, aren’t going to buy Russian oil through India
or Turkey or China. IS IT?
But the numbers are saying something different. According to Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), taking advantage of refining loophole, the EU, Ukraine and the US has become one of the biggest buyers of Russian oil. In the last three years, the US astronomically increased its import of Russian oil through Turkey. Hypocrisy? NO. The US initiate a tendency to term their hypocrisy as national interest. So, buying cheap Russian oil from Turkey and funding Russia against Ukraine is a decision supporting US national interest. However, similar activity by others, for them, is an act of war funding.
It is already established that Ukraine War is one of the major diplomatic failures of the US and Europe, and their attempt to shifting blame to India, make Western approach regarding Ukraine a diplomatic disaster. The US need to realize that they no longer remain dominant actor. They should try to learn live, breathe and do business in a multipolar world.
