Prime Minister Modi’s Visit to Malaysia

At the invitation of Prime Minister of Malaysia, H.E. Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahhim, Prime Minister Modi visited Malaysia (7-8 February, 2026). In a special gesture, PM Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia was present in the airport to receive PM Modi.

India and Malaysia maintained a strong relation. Malaysia hosts one of the largest Indian diasporas in the world. Moreover, it is India’s third largest trading partner in ASEAN. On the investment front, major Malaysian investors, like, PETRONAS, United Engineers (UEM) etc. have strong presence in India. At the same time, more than 200 Indian companies are also actively operating in Malaysia in different sectors like, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, construction etc. In August, 2024, India and Malaysia elevated their bilateral relationship to ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’.

During his visit, he met with Prime Minister of Malaysia, members of Malaysian Parliament, ministers, dignitaries from the Indian community and business leaders. During his visit, both the countries signed a number of MoUs and Agreements in varius fields, such as, audio-visual co-production, co-operation in disaster management, combating and preventing corruption, semiconductors, security cooperation, health and medicine etc.

To strengthen Indo-Malaysia relation, PM Modi announced to establish an Indian Consulate General in Malaysia. He also announced to establish a dedicated Thiruvalluvar Centre in University of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. He also announced a Institution of Thiruvalluvar Scholarships for Malaysian Nationals.

To ease cross border payment was a necessity for both the countries. Tourism is a growing sector in both India and Malaysia. In 2025, approximately, 1.4 million Indians travelled to Malaysia, whereas, around 300,000 Malaysian tourists visited India. For the benefit of the tourists, NIPL and PAYNET SDN BHD signed an Agreement.
